Accepting Credit Cards for your Business Startup

Overview

It's important for startup businesses to accept credit cards.

Accepting credit cards involves several several different steps.

1. Merchant Account
   A merchant account is a type of account that allows startup businesses to accept payments by debit or credit cards.
2. A Mechanism To Enter Credit Card Information
   • Credit Card Terminal
     This is the credit card swipe machine you see in all retail stores.
   • Payment Gateway
     This is the online alternative to a Credit Card Terminal. If your startup business does not have a brick-and-morter storefront presence, this is what you need. You will use a Payment Gateway if you accept payment via a shopping cart. Your shopping cart must be compatible with your Payment Gateway.

Many companies bundle the Merchant Account with the Payment Gateway. It's not necessary to have both with the same company, but they must be compatible.
