City and County Permits and Requirements
There may be no city or county permits, registrations, or other bureaucratic stuff needed, but it's best to be safe and inquire. Two quick phone calls can settle this.
City
Look in your phonebook and you will find a section that lists government offices by city, county, and state. In the city section, find the phone number for City Hall.
Call them and ask the following:
- Are there any permits required for a business in the city?
- Do I need to register with any city offices, perhaps the tax assessor?
(The one thing you don't want to do is avoid or neglect taxes. We'll accumulate lots of tax deductions, but you don't want to avoid or neglect paying taxes. Local taxes are usually tiny, anyhow, in the general scheme of things.) - Is there anything else I need to do as a new business in the city?
If you get someone who doesn't know the answers to these questions, ask if there's someone else you should talk to to make sure you're conforming to all city requirements.
County
Again in the phonebook in the county section, find the number for the Assessor's Office.
- Call them and ask the same three questions, but for county instead of city.
Chamber of Commerce
If you're not confident that you've been given good information by calling the city and county, definitely call your local chamber of commerce. It's their job to know this stuff, and at the very least, they should be able to refer you to someone who can point you in the right direction.
